The Sands Hotel was one of the earliest resorts that started to operate on the Las Vegas Strip . Wayne McAllister was the designer mastermind behind its construction.

At a time when the Sands was at the peak of its career, it was known as the focal point of entertainment and the most happening place on the Strip. It witnessed performances by world famous artists and sow men. There was a provision of the guests meeting the stars after the show was over at the lounge after their late-night shows got over. It was well visited by famous celebrities of the US who frequented Las Vegas on leisure or on business.
During the last years of its existence, the Sands were reduced to a shadow of its earlier self. It became difficult for it to compete with the more advanced and modern resorts that sprang up all over Las Vegas Strip. Sheldon Adelson was its last owner, who took the decision to shut it down and build a new and renovated hotel in its place. On November 26, 1996, it was finally demolished much against the wishes of many of its loyalists. Prior to its demolition the Las Vegas shots of the Con Air movie were shot at the Sands. As of now, the Venetian stands at the place of the Sands Hotel.
